Question 5 continued- Audience feedback on my final products

I have used Audio Boom to record the audios

These audios are from Annabel Truman, 18 from Birmingham. She likes chart and indie music and she listens to music on her phone. She also downloads music from spotify. She would be part of my target as she likes to shop in places such as New Look and she is in my target age range of 15-25.

This audio is from Holly Evans, 22 from Birmingham. Holly likes to listen to RnB and chart music. She is also part of my target market however Holly has a good job in a bank so she is higher up on the Jicnar at around C1.

I have asked a Male, aged 20 from Birmingham what they think-
'I like Platinum magazine because I like the colours used as they co-ordinate well together. I think that the artists used are famous and would appeal to a wide range of audiences. I like it that the text is all varied in size because it makes the magazine more visually appealing. I do not think that I would buy this magazine because I have never bought one before and I don't think I would read it.'

Question 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

My music magazine is called Platinum which has a genre of mostly chart and pop music. My magazine is aimed at teenagers aged 15-25 who are most likely to be interested in this genre as it is easy to access, such as being on the radio and TV often but also, it is very popular among young people. The magazine is aimed at both males and females however I think it would attract more of the female market due to the colours used and the articles inside. My target market are most likely to be in full time education, either at school, sixth form/college or university. This means that they may not have a large amount of disposable income, hence why my magazine is reasonably priced at £2.50 for a monthly magazine. My target market may have a part time job in a retail environment or a restaurant therefore they will have some income each month in order to be able to afford to buy my magazine. Due to some of my market being at uni, they may be living in halls or away from home and they will be going through exams, work and socializing. Socializing may be done through the use of music as this is popular hobby and topic for young people and often a talking point as they will compare which songs they are currently into. Those that live at home may live in a affluent area as they have been able to secure a place at uni or sixth form. This means they may live in a 3/4 bedroom house in a good area. They may be from a range of different backgrounds and cultures, however I would say that my target audience would be people who have grown up in England because of the style of music in my magazine.

My target audience may be into fashion and they will take a pride in their appearance. They may wear jeans and converse or boots. they will shop in places such as River Island, H&M, New Look etc. These are high street shops that sell clothes at reasonable prices therefore my target market will be able to afford them. They will value things such as going out with family and friends to restaurants, cinema, shopping etc. This is because they will enjoy spending time with the people that are around them. They may not have any 'real' responsibilities in life such as children, therefore this gives my target audience a lot of freedom in what the do and how they spend their money. They may spend their money on clothes, eating out, restaurants, music, games and other forms of entertainment. This shows that they would spend their money on other types of media such as TV so they may be more likely to purchase a music magazine if this is the case.

My ideal reader may own a small car such as a mini or fiat etc. This means that they will be able to listen to music in their car on radio stations such as Capital or Kiss. This will increase their awareness to new songs that are coming into the market as stations like these often play chart music. They are likely to have an iPhone in which they can listen to iTunes and download music very easily onto their phone. They might also use apps such as Spotify where they can download music.

My target audience would be students therefore on the JICNAR scale they are towards the bottom in band D or E. However, if students are still living at home then their parents may be in band ABC1, categorized as middle class, which are the highest categories you can be in. This means that my secondary user of homeowners and parents would be in a completely different band to my actual target market.

Double Page Spread Content - Interview

Interview with Holly for double page spread

Hey Holly, this is your first magazine interview, how are you feeling?

Hey Emily, I’m good and excited for people to hear my music and for them to see the type of music I’m trying to produce.

That’s great! What’s it been like working with Simon Cowells, Syco record label?

It’s been amazing! I’ve been allowed to do so much, experiment with new things and find ways that work for me. Simon has always been there at the other end of the phone if I’ve needed him and we’ve been able to create some good music that hopefully everyone reading will enjoy!

Tell us about the type of music you’ve created then and who it’s aimed towards?

My music is similar to the likes of Taylor Swift in the way that some songs are very upbeat and dance tracks however others are slower and the words are more meaningful. My personal favourite song is Bright Stars as this will help a lot of teenagers to overcome their struggles and hopefully they’ll be able to get away from reality while listening to my music.

When’s your next single out?

It releases on 4th March 2016. It’s called Small Life.

What have you been doing for the past 5 years?

I was at Sixth Form however; I dropped out half way through the first year so that I could concentrate on my music. In 2015 I was contacted by Syco to go to speak to some of the producers and that’s where they signed me and I’ve been making music ever since.

Who has been your idol growing up?

I love BeyoncĂ© and her music. She’s always been an inspirational figure to me since she was in Destiny’s Child in 1997. Her solo career started in 2002 and I’ve seen her in concert 4 times.

What are your aspirations for the next year?

I’d like get my album out, One Chance, by the end of the year and then I’d love to go on tour around the UK and eventually the world! I'm going to be performing at V Festival later on this year. Its going to be my first time performing live to such a big audience but I cant wait to get on the stage.

How have fans received you and your music?
I'm so thankful for how my fans have treated me with my first single, reaching number 1 in the UK in a few days! They're amazing and I cant wait to tour soon and meet some of them.

Who would you like to collaborate with?

I’ve always aspired to be as successful as Rihanna so producing music with her would be amazing. In this album, I’ve collaborated upcoming artist James Bay and he’s been such a success over the past year. He was great to work with because he was so calm yet such a good artist.

We know you write your own music, does it all come naturally to you?

Mostly yes, I can write a song in about 30 minutes sometimes! However, it normally takes me a couple of days to perfect a song. I get most of my inspiration from other artists and my past life experiences so I find it quite easy to make music.

What do you think of Zayn Malik’s new music?

I think it’s different and I like it. I think he’s come in to his own and he’s doing things that he wants to do now rather than producing music as part of a group.

Will you be going to the Brit awards this year?

Yes! It’s on later this week and I’ll be wearing a Topshop red dress that I bought yesterday. I’m looking forward to seeing Adele, Little Mix and others. One day I’d love to win a Brit award though it’d be amazing.

Thank you so much Holly!

No problem.

You can download Holly's first single, Lush, from iTunes now!

Contents Page Research and Common Conventions

Common Conventions
  • All pages have the use of images, with some using just one large image but others having 3/4 images ranging in size. This creates variety for the audience.
  • The structure of all the magazines is that the contents is in columns with most just being on one side of the image. This makes it easier for the reader to see what is in the magazine and to quickly go to a particular page. The title of the page is often written in bold, with the anchorage text underneath in smaller writing.
  • The contents heading is always at the top of the page. this is a common convention across all magazines.
  • Page numbers are an important thing on the contents page as this helps the reader to know where articles are. Page numbers are normally displayed with just the number and not the word 'page' or 'p' in front of it.
  • Most pictures have a small amount of anchorage text next to them to explain to the reader why that person is there.
  • The colours on most of the contents pages are quite simple such as grey, white and black, with a pop of colour such as red or blue to brighten the page up.
  • The fonts used on the contents pages are mostly very modern with a sans serif font in bold capital letters. however Q magazine uses a serif font which can be seen as old fashioned, also they have written it in lower case which is not the convention of a music magazine.
  • Some contents pages such as the top right image, are shown in a double page spread which allows for more space for images and text. It brings emphasis to the main image more as this is often displayed over almost one full page.

My Front Cover Draft

Development of my final front cover

This post shows my first draft front cover to my final front cover and the progress that the magazine has made. I have changed the image to something more appropriate and I have tried out different combinations of colour to see what works best. I have changed my cover lines so that they are more appealing to my target audience and chosen genre. The fonts I have used vary from Gill Sans MT, Gill Sans MT Condensed and Harabara Mais Demo. I have created a pug using the fireworks tools that shows the Platinum readers what they can win inside the magazine. The anchorage text has been kerned to create bigger spaces inbetween the letters to create emphasis on the text. The masthead has had a drop shadow affect which makes it stand out.
